Wallpapers in this time period were mostly imported from England and to a lesser degree, from Europe and the Orient. One of the first recorded advertisements for wallpaper printing in what is now the United States dates from 1756, in New York.

For the next thirty years, wallpaper printing as an industry was very small, and generally copied the imported designs by the use of block-printing. After that, the American wallpaper manufacturers slowly grew in importance, producing hand-made wallpapers for both the domestic market and a fledgling export market. Imported wallpapers, primarily English and French, remained popular throughout this period

It was not until around 1840 that machine printed wallpapers were first made in America.

Historic Style have chosen a good collection of wallpaper designs that have been documented as having been produced during the time period 1740 - 1840. All are now produced by machine, keeping the design, colours and scale of the original patterns.
