The art of tube-lining tiles is highly specialized. Rather like icing a cake, the design is piped on to the flat tile in liquid clay, then the glazes are poured into the areas of the tile that are created behind the shallow "dams" formed by the tube-lined decoration. Expensive even in 1900, owing to the many possibilities of error in manufacture, the attractive appearance of these tiles gave rise to the moulded art nouveau tiles as a less expensive alternative to achieve a similar result in a rich-looking tile.


These tiles are still hand lined in England, and coordinate with our range of thicker plain tiles.

All tiles have a high-gloss finish which is not plainly visible in the images below.
